On this lesson, you will learn about the Pull Up Right Reverse manoeuvre. You will cover:
- Where is appropriate to do the manoeuvre
- How to perform the manoeuvre
- How to deal with other road users
The most important parts of reversing are:
- Good observations
- Good speed control
- Be accurate
Where to pull up
Choose a suitable (Safe, Legal, Convenient) place to pull up.
Do not pull up:
- Directly behind another vehicle if possible. This will make it more difficult to move away again as you won’t be able to see the road ahead as clearly.
- Less than 10 metres (about 2 car lengths) near or opposite a junction.
- Outside a driveway. This is not convenient for anyone wanting to enter or exit the property.
- Opposite a vehicle already parked on the left, unless it’s a very wide road. This can make the road too narrow for other road users.
Moving Over to the Other Side of the Road
Slow right down, or stop the car about 6-8 car lengths from were to intend to pull up on the right. Once you have decided it’s safe, drive over to the opposite kerb. You need to drive over with quite a shallow angle. You are more likely to hit the kerb if you have a sharp angle. Try to stop reasonably close to the kerb (about 20 – 30cm), and straight (parallel) to the kerb. You must not hit the kerb. Once you have stopped secure the car and cancel the signal.
Reversing 2 car lengths
If you have managed to stop reasonably close and parallel to the kerb, this manoeuvre should be fairly straightforward.
As usual, use the P O M routine:
- PREPARE – select reverse gear, set gas and the biting point
- OBSERVE – check all around for a safe time to start moving
- MOVE – look out the rear window, release the handbrake and move slowly backwards (walking pace)
Check all around continuously and, if another road user approaches on your side of the road, pause and allow them to pass. If they are passing on the opposite side of the road you may be safe to continue. When you have reversed about 2 car lengths stop and secure the car.
Moving Off
To move away you will use the P O M routine:
- PREPARE – select 1st gear, set gas and the biting point
- OBSERVE – check all around for a safe time to move off. Finish with a LEFT blind spot check
- MOVE – when it’s safe to move off signal left, release the handbrake and drive over to the left side of the road.
Important Points
1. The most important aspects of any manoeuvre are:
- Effective observation
- Good control
- Accuracy
Accuracy is not as important as effective observations and good control.
2. You should always move the car very slowly when reversing and give other road users priority.
3. When steering, the car should be moving. Don’t steer while the car is not moving. This is known as ‘dry steering’ and can cause damage to the tyres and steering mechanism.
4. Do not signal while reversing. Your reverse lights will inform drivers behind what you intend to do.
5. Look back when driving back! Don’t rely on mirrors only. You can see more distance behind and to the sides when you turn around and look back.
