PART 2 EXAM DAY TIPS

1. First impressions: make sure your car is clean, inside and out. Be well dressed and well groomed. The appearance of you and your vehicle will make a greater impression than anything you say and that is crucial. Remember, there is no second chance to make a first impression.

2. Warm up: arrange to have an hours’ driving session around the area of the test centre on the day of your test. This will help you to warm up and get in the swing of things. You’ll also be aware of any new roadworks, obstructions etc. and will feel more able to deal with them.

3. Nerves: if you start to feel particularly nervous have a go at the Breathing Technique.
Breath in deeply for the count of 7
Pause and then blow out for the count of 11
Repeat 4-5 times, until you start to feel calmer

(Read the Spot On Driving blog ‘Dealing with Driving Test Nerves’ for more advise.

Once the Part 2 exam starts you’ll settle into your driving and your attention will be on the road rather than your own feelings and your nervousness will start to disappear. Think of it as a drive with your trainer.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask: if you don’t understand the examiners instructions or directions, ask them to repeat it. They really don’t mind.

5. Think positive: before you start a manoeuvre repeat to yourself three times – silently – “this is easy’. Think positively at all times. You can do it!

Remember: If you think you can, you probably will

6. Making a mistake: if you feel you’re making a mistake on a reverse manoeuvre, just pull forward (when it’s safe) and start again.

7. Stalling: if you happen to stall the car, deal with it and move on. As long as you don’t stall in a dangerous situation, such as on a roundabout and as long as you handle it properly, this needn’t count as a serious or dangerous fault

8. You’re not the examiner: don’t spend the drive trying to judge your own driving and if you make a mistake don’t assume you’ve failed. Put it behind you and carry on driving as well as you can. A good way to deal with this and not think about what has just happened is think about and silently commentate on what’s happening ahead of you.

9. Keep your eyes on the road: try hard not to look at the SE and how they are marking your test. You won’t be able to understand it anyway, they may not mark the relevant faults until the end of the test (if you create any).
