The mirror signal manoeuvre routine:

The MSM routine is the routine that you must use on approach to every junction and hazard.

Here is a full breakdown of the routine with ‘manoeuvre’ being split down into it’s component parts of ‘position’, ‘speed’‘gear’ and ‘look’.

Mirrors: Effective observation, check position and speed of traffic behind

Signal: If necessary, well timed

Position: Correctly, accurately, in good time

Speed: Change speed as necessary (acceleration, deceleration, footbrake)

Gear: Match the gear to the speed of the car if necessary for best control

Look: Plan well ahead and act early on what you see (look, assess, decide, act)

You may not always need to do every part of this routine at every hazard but must go through it every time and only miss out what is not required at any given situation.
