Before You Drive

Before you drive:

Driving licence: Everyone must have a driving licence that entitles them to drive the category of vehicle they are driving.

Leaner drivers: All learners must display clearly ‘L plates’ (or ‘D plates’ in Wales) on the front and rear of the vehicle. These should be removed or covered if the vehicle is being driven by a full licence holder.

Eyesight: In order to drive you must be able to read a new style number plate at a distance of 20 metres, or an old style number plate at 20.5 metres with glasses if needed. If you require glasses, then these must be worn every time you drive.

Supervising learners: In order to supervise a learner driver, you must be at least 21 years old and have held a full licence for the category of vehicle being driven for at least 3 years.

Tax and Insurance: Before driving you must ensure that the vehicle is correctly taxed and insured.
