The Overtaking Routine

Preparation for the overtake:

Mirrors – What is the position and speed of following traffic?

Signal – If required to move into position.

Position – Close enough to the vehicle in front to overtake and to give a good view. (Remember not too close to compromise safety)

Speed – Match speed with vehicle in front.

Gear – Consider changing to a lower gear to give you better acceleration.

Look – Assess if it is safe. Consider other traffic, road surface, other hazards.

The overtake:

Mirrors – What is the position and speed of following traffic?

Signal – Always signal for the driver’s oncoming, behind and the vehicle you’re over taking.

Manoeuvre – After final checks and it is safe, overtake promptly. Give adequate clearance to others and be careful not to move back in too soon (make sure you can see the vehicle you have overtaken in your mirrors before you move back in).
