When to Check Your Mirrors

When should you check your mirrors?

You need to be continually aware of what is going on all around the car. ‘Rule 161 of the Highway Code’ says:

All mirrors should be used effectively throughout your journey.

  • Use your mirrors frequently so that you always know what is behind and to each side of you
  • Use them in good time before you signal or change direction or speed
  • Be aware that mirrors do not cover all areas and there will be blind spots.

You should check your mirrors well before:

  • A change of speed – (Interior mirror followed by the most relevant exterior mirrors)
  • A change of direction – (Interior followed by exterior on the side your turning)
  • You indicate – (Interior followed by exterior on the side your turning)

Use your mirrors in pairs and if there is nothing to cause you to check your mirrors then check every 10 seconds or so to keep up to date with conditions around you.
